The Vietnam War was a military conflict that occurred in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1959 to 30 April 1975. The war was fought between the communist North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the United States and other member nations of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO). The Viet Cong, the lightly armed South Vietnamese communist insurgency, largely fought a guerrilla war against anti-communist forces in the region. The North Vietnamese Army engaged in a more conventional war, at times committing large-sized units into battle. U.S. and South Vietnamese forces relied on air superiority and overwhelming firepower to conduct search and destroy operations, involving ground forces, artillery and airstrikes. The United States entered the war to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam as part of their wider strategy of containment. Military advisors arrived beginning in 1950. U.S. involvement escalated in the early 1960s and combat units were deployed beginning in 1965. Involvement peaked in 1968 at the time of the Tet Offensive. Despite a peace treaty signed by all parties in January 1973, fighting continued. In response to the anti-war movement, the U.S. Congress passed the Case-Church Amendment in June 1973 prohibiting further direct U.S. military intervention without Congressional authorization yet the U.S. was still heavily invested in the war until 1975, when North Vietnam captured Saigon. North and South Vietnam were reunified the following year. The war exacted a huge human cost in terms of fatalities, including 3 to 4 million Vietnamese from both sides, 1.5 to 2 million Laotians and Cambodians, and 58,159 U.S. soldiers. Q. Did Ho Chi Minh (leader of North Vietnam) start the war because he wanted independence in Vietnam, did he start the Vietnam War against South Vietnam (for them to become communist and the nation to become united)? These answers are great, but who was Ho Chi Minh fighting against was it the South Vietnamese, Viet Cong? Or was it the Americans? Asked by jo - Thu Jun 11 06:03:22 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. The Americans began to get involved after the French lost the war against Uncle Ho (Chi Minh) and the Vietminh*. The US sent Special Forces advisers and helicopters and air support, but things expanded in 1964. As "the Pentagon papers**" showed us, president LB Johnson ordered the US Navy to stage several fake 'border incidents' in the Gulf of Tonkin^, just as Hitler did against Poland in 1939. Just like in Poland, these manufactured events were used to get a declaration, or resolution to wage war against a country that had done nothing against the US. The reason to wage this war was, on the surface, to prevent a domino effect where one country 'falling' to communism causes another, which causes another, etc. In reality, I strongly… [cont.] Answered by Panama Joe - Thu Jun 11 09:11:17 2009 Where can I get good information on the vietnam war?
Q. I am about to write a book on the vietnam war and I need every bit of information I can get. it would also be nice if I could find info/pics of the gear/guns/vehicles they used so,, any suggestions? She was extensively quoted and referenced in older texts on the Vietnam War. Johnson's theoretics and strategies are paramount in understanding the VN war. Older texts are not reliable in their treatment of Johnson. Stick with the new stuff. Answered by Straycat - Tue Mar 6 21:02:29 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "vietnam war" Dennis Gene Barnes
