Ever been referred to a blood specialist while pregnant?
Q. I am 33 weeks pregnant today and my doc just called and has referred me to a blood specialist. She says that my platelets are fairly high. They are supposed to be around 400 but they are at 438. What does this mean? Does it only have to do with iron and anemia or what? I asked a lot of questions, but all she could tell me was the above and not to freak out Any experience with this?

A. Three babies later, and I have learnt two things. One, they scare you by doing tests for absolutely everything without explaining things properly ( protein in your urine, low platelets, baby's too small). Two, if it was to worry about, you wouldn't be referred to a specialist. You would be on the ward and have tubes and needles in your arms or on complete bed rest. Please don't worry unless they give you bad news. Just enjoy that little life inside you. It's a magical time, don't let medical speak worry you. They will test you and if you need a supplement - in my case it was B12 injections so I could absorb iron better - they will give it to you. And before you go for the test, write down what questions you want to ask and don't be afraid… [cont.]
