New England is a region in the northeastern corner of the United States, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Canada and the state of New York, consisting of the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

In one of the earliest European settlements in the New World, Pilgrims from the Kingdom of England first settled in New England in 1620, in the colony of Plymouth. Ten years later, the Puritans settled north of Plymouth Colony in Boston, thus forming Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. In the late 18th century, the New England colonies would be among the first North American British colonies to demonstrate ambitions of independence from the British Crown via the American Revolution, although they would later oppose the War of 1812 between the United States and United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

New England produced the first pieces of American literature and philosophy and was home to the beginnings of free public education. In the 19th century, it played a prominent role in the movement to abolish slavery in the United States. It was the first region of the United States to be transformed by the Industrial Revolution.

Today, New England is a major center of education, high technology, insurance, medicine, and tourism. It is one of the most liberal regions in the United States, known for its universities, historic cities and landmarks, and natural beauty.

It is the only non-geographically defined region recognized by the United States and maintains a strong sense of cultural identity set apart from the rest of the country, although the terms of this identity are often contested, paradoxically combining Puritanism with liberalism, agrarian life with industry, and isolation with immigration.

What's the difference between the New England Colonies and the Chesapeake Colonies in the 1600s?
Q. My textbook keeps talking about the New England colonies and the Chesapeake colonies... what's the difference? were the Chesapeake colonies the puritans?
Asked by 100%me - Sat Aug 29 16:13:36 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The New England colonies contain states in the Northeast corner of the USA, including Rhode Island, Mass., Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. The Chesapeake Colonies I'm pretty sure is mostly Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina and idk which else for sure. Some of their differences besides geography could be their trading on raw materials and the way their economy ran, and also their religious groups which pretty much ran the states.

What is a good New England mountain for beginning skiers?
Q. I want to take my girlfriend on a ski trip and teach her how to ski, but I haven't been at smalller "beginner" mountains for a long time now. I'm looking for New England mountains with relatively easy terrain, and if I can get a great deal on ski-and-stay packages that would probably be the deciding factor. Anyone have any suggestions for me?

A. Pat's Peak is really good for learning! Schools take all sorts of trips there for the students to learn to ski. And there aren't many steep trails, so it should be perfect! I'm not so sure about ski-and-stay packages there, but a place like Ragged Mountain might have some and it's not ragged. There are a lot of beginner trails there too! You could also try Bretton Woods, but it's really crowded there and it's not really a learning mountain, but they probably have ski-any-stays.
