From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. In physics, and more specifically kinematics, acceleration is the change in velocity over time. Because velocity is a vector, it can change in two ways: a change in magnitude and/or a change in direction. In one dimension, i.e. a line, acceleration is the rate at which something speeds up. However, as a vector quantity, acceleration is also the rate at which direction changes. Acceleration has the dimensions L T . In SI units, acceleration is measured in meters per second squared (m/s). In common speech, the term acceleration commonly is used for an increase in speed (the magnitude of velocity); a decrease in speed is called deceleration. In physics, a change in the direction of velocity also is an acceleration: for rotary motion, the change in direction of velocity results in centripetal (toward the center) acceleration; where as the rate of change of speed is a tangential acceleration. In classical mechanics, for a body with constant mass, the acceleration of the body is proportional to the resultant (total) force acting on it (Newton's second law): where F is the resultant force acting on the body, m is the mass of the body, and a is its acceleration. GNU Free Documentation License How can I make my car ride smoother and accelerate faster? Q. I drive a rebuilt 1999 Ford Contour. I haven't had any major problems with it, but it accelerates very slowly and rides very bumpy. Sometimes when I have to accelerate quickly (i.e. merging into traffic, getting back on the highway) it's as if it's having trouble accelerating. I get so frustrated with it that I slam on the gas pedal sometimes, but that just uses alot of gas. The car doesn't get that good of gas mileage anyway. Furthermore, I can feel bumps in the road that are barely visible and when I am on the highway, the wheel and dashboard vibrate. What are some economic ways I can solve these problems? Asked by Cynthia S - Wed Aug 15 18:30:03 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well it's going to cash you a pit if you want a better ride. Here is one thing you can do. Balance all the air on your tire. Make sure to oil change you care for better gas miles. If you want a smoother ride, I would recommend maybe put new shock. Over time shock runs out and the ride will feel bumping. To make you car accelerater faster will cost you too much money so don't do it. Will that's all I can say so I hope it helps. Answered by Nidwal - Wed Aug 15 18:44:11 2007 Why do air molecules accelerate or decelerate due to changes of temperature? Q. I know for a fact that when you add more energy to a system, it automatically gains kinetic energy (in accordance with the formula KE = 1/2 mv^2). But what causes molecules to just suddenly accelerate or decelerate with a higher or lower kinetic energy? Is there a force which acts on them to move? Why do molecules just start moving when more energy is applied? What does heat do that makes them move faster? Asked by Mr. Tornado - Sat Apr 10 00:27:06 2010 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes there is a force causing them to change speeds. Funny you should ask. The air molecules continuously rebound off the walls of their container with elastic collisions. 1. What if the walls of the container are colder? 2. What if the walls of the container can move away? For 1, the walls of the container end after the collisions with higher than previous speeds, and the gas molecules end with slower than previous speeds. The process of transferring heat to the colder walls of the container applies a force to the air molecules and robs them of their energy. For 2, if a wall can move as a solid object, the gas molecules are pushing on it against its constraint. When a gas expands adiabatically, its molecules push the walls of the… [cont.] Answered by gintable - Sat Apr 10 00:33:08 2010 What was the velocity of the car when it started to accelerate?
Q. A car, initially traveling with a uniform velocity, accelerates at a rate of 1.0 m/s2 for a period of 12 seconds. If the car traveled190 m during this 12 second period, What was the velocity of the car when it started to accelerate Asked by isrababy2000 - Fri Dec 8 08:10:38 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. 9.83m/s Answered by zen - Fri Dec 8 08:14:59 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "accelerate" Brown: new global climate body needed to accelerate post-Copenhagen talks
