Prince Edward Island (PEI or P.E.I.; French: Île-du-Prince-Édouard) is a Canadian province consisting of an island of the same name. The maritime province is the smallest in the nation in both land area and population (excluding the territories). The island has a few other names: "Garden of the Gulf" referring to the pastoral scenery and lush agricultural lands throughout the province; and "Birthplace of Confederation", referring to the Charlottetown Conference in 1864.

According to the 2009 estimates, Prince Edward Island has 140,402 residents. It is located in a rectangle defined roughly by 46°47°N, and 62°–64°30′W and at 5,683.91 km² (2,194.57 sq mi) in size, it is the 104th largest island in the world, and Canada's 23rd largest island. The island was named for Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn (1767–1820), the fourth son of King George III and the father of Queen Victoria.

What route to take from Halifax to Prince Edward Island?
Q. I am going to Halifax and would like to go to Prince Edward Island too. I only have a week, how much time do I need? Is it far and worth going to?

A. Definitely worth the short 3 hour drive. Take the 104 east from Halifax, double lane divided highway to Truro (75km)where you take the Trans Canada west towards New Brunswick(115km)on double lane divided highway. Just 2km into New Brunswick is Aulac where you take the PEI exit , about 40km to the Confederation Bridge, 11km across and you are on the Island. Tim Horton's at exits in Truro, Debert, Stewiacke, Oxford, Amherst and another in at exit 7 although the name of the town is escaping me at present. Mentioned those in case you are a coffee drinker. This time of year is not the best driving conditions but if you aren't visiting until spring or the summer, then PEI is more than worth the trip. Enjoy...
