1960s a notable decade in US history for the successes of black civil right movement. Help assess validity?
Q. I'm in AP US history and we're studying for our exam. Any in depth details would be fantastic :) The full question is this: Despite the mixed records of presidents Kennedy, Nixon, Johnson, and the divisions of the civil rights movement, the 1960s is a notable decade in us history for the profound successes of the black civil rights movement. Assess the validity of this statement. Support for either side is fine.

A. This statement is valid. Civil Rights Act Voting Rights Act Freedom Rides MLK's demonstrations Southern Christian Leadership Conference Malcolm X Black Power Movement Thurgood Marshall became the 1st African American to be appointed to the Supreme Court. Use any of these and you should be good!

Why do people from the 1960s and back sound so different in films?
Q. In older movies and TV shows, do you ever notice how you can always tell they're older by the way the actors sound? Like even if you were to digitally put in a modern backdrop and update it, the characters would still sound like they're from the 1960s and back? Why is this? It's not just their choice of wording, it's their entire voice in general. Even when you watch old presidential film footage or footage from WWII, they sound different than normal voices today. What gives?

A. It might just be the recording device used back then. However, every time I imagine what life would be like in the 20's or 30's everyone sounds like the announcers at the horse races.

What are some expensive baseball cards from the 1960s?
Q. I have some baseball cards from the 1960s and I am wondering is I have some good ones that are worth a lot of money.

A. They are only worth money if they are in top condition. Cards of this age typically are well worn or have visible blemishes. If this is the case, they are worth very little. Look for Hall of Famers, Yankee players, and Rookie cards.

I want to restore/rebuild a 1960s Ferrari. What is the best place for me to start?
Q. I have a facility in which to operate. I just need to know how to obtain parts and everything I'd need to start a project on a 1960s Ferrari. Edit: i do not want to have it restored for me. I enjoy the restoration process and doing the work myself. Please refrain from suggesting i have the work done elsewhere. Thank you.

A. Borrow the money and have the car professionally restored at a Quality Shop. That way the car will be worth 10 times more than if you did it yourself. I have owned many cars that required restoring over the yeas and have only done one of them by myself. And the only reason that I did that was because I never intend to sell this car - EVER !

How were independent record shops in the UK run in the 1960s? How did the booths work for example?
Q. I am doing some research into the running of an independent record shop in the UK in the 1960s. For example, did every shop have a wee listening booth? Who put the record on? How many headsets were there? Generally what were the staff like? Who sold the records to the shop in the first place? Etc

A. Oh dear, showing my age now! We had a record shop in our town called 'Huxfords' and it had 3 listening booths. You asked the assistant to put a record on for your booth and you went in and donned the headphones. You could then listen in private. 3 booths meant 3 people could listen to different things all at once (this was obviously different to the previous answerer's experience). The staff were very friendly and very trendy as I remember, dressing in the fashions of the time. I don't know who provided the records to the shops. It was a great experience, and such a shame that the 'listening booth' went out of fashion.

What was the normal operational speed of a military helicopter in the early 1960s?
Q. I am writing a novel and I need some information about helicopters used by the British Armed Forces in the early 1960s. What was the normal operational speed for these machines? And can you give me any relevant reference points on the web so that I do further research if needed? As I already know the world speed record for helicopters at the time, I can sift out the wild guesses!

A. The Westland Scout had a max normal operating speed of around 100 kts. Realistic value would depend on load and environmental conditions.

What historical event from the 1500s to 1960s should I write my paper on?
Q. We have to write a 3 to 5 page paper in my modern western civ class on a historical event. I want to write about something interesting. I was thinking the concentration camp Auschwitz or maybe drug usage in the 1960s. I am at a loss.

A. The best way to approach this is to figure out which topic interests you most since you are more likely to have some knowledge of it already. This will make it easier to write your paper, since it's always easier to expand on your existing foundation than to have to create a new one. Both topics you mention have been covered extensively, so there is an abundance of data, but it will be hard to write something original. Picking a more obscure event may mean doing some research but it will also give you a chance to be original. For example, you could write about the first written constitution, which was French Constitution of 1791, and its meaning to social development. Here is a link to the text of French Constitution of 1791:

How much does a small stain reduce the value of a $400 vintage 1960s Chanel dress?
Q. I keep going back to a store that's selling a 1960s raw silk Chanel dress for $400, and I love it, but I'm hesitating to buy it at that price because there is a small stain (not noticeable at all unless you look very closely) near the bottom of the skirt. What is this dress actually worth, given the stain, and is $400 a fair price? Only serious answers please!

A. $400 for an authentic 60s raw silk Chanel dress is an excellent price! If it were in pristine condition, it would probably sell on the international market for $600 or more depending on how desirable its shape, print and colour are. Since you like it very much and its only flaw is not noticeable, I'd say buy it because in terms of pure financial investment, it's not a badly priced buy at all. 1960s silk Chanel gear is VERY difficult to find and in the vintage and antique markets rarity dictates price so, all things considered, $400 may sound like a lot of money (and in absolute terms it is) but its not unreasonable for this type of garment. Remember that it is not just by any designer (but by Chanel), it's not polyester or cotton (but… [cont.]

A. As historical fiction, the Godfather was pretty accurate. The only problem with your question is that Godfather I had very, very little to do with the 1960s...that was Godfather II. Assuming that's the one you meant, then it's pretty much summed up in the opening sequence when Michael is reflecting on all the changes in his family and in his life, how he had to do what he did in order to protect his family. He was drawn by a deep sense of honor, particularly to his family (both biological and mafia). He was a quiet, dignified leader and did his best to have those around him keep their heads and not act on emotion, but instead to step back and observe, waiting for the right time to act...and the right way to act. The cost of living have gone up immensely which made poorer families suffer terribly. Also you could take about the styles of clothing that they wore in the 1930's compared to thte 1960's.

Try to find chromogenic "black and white" film that gets developed with C-41 chemicals. The color characteristics of color film has changed a _LOT_ since Kodacolor, Kodachrome, and Ektachrome were introduced starting in the 1930s. Kodachrome and Ektachrome currently available probably come closest to the color characteristics of the stuff 40+ years ago. But that's slide film, so you're going to do scanning to get reprints or pay somebody big bucks to do it for you... Why are some students thinking the 1960s CRM was a time of revenge?
Q. I am hearing students say that the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s was a time of revenge when Blacks got back at Whites- and even hearing that Dr. King wanted to get revenge. Of course, this is completely incorrect but where is this coming from? Also, if you say the Black Panthers you are wrong. The Black Panthers believed in using defense when necessary, they do not seek revenge.

A. If students are thinking this, I'll say it's an isolated few at an isolated place. Remember that there were (white) Hippies in the movement, College professors, university students - and many others fighting against the system. The music of the times was from anti-war movements, peace activists, civil rights proponents, it most certainly wasn't black against white but both - against the institutions and lawmakers. People wanted peace, racial, gender and sexual equality, and more freedoms - not revenge. Dr King didn't want revenge, he wanted equality.
