How do I decorate my bedroom like the 1940s?
Q. I want to decorate my bedroom in 1940s glamor style. My inspiration came from the notebook. I realize the notebook isn't glamor but I would love to incorporate both of these styles. And ideas?

A. Colors Choose Jadeite and a red and white theme. You can find plenty of vintage accents to fill your bedroom for either one of these color schemes. Why not start a collection of jadeite that you can display in drawers? You can jazz the place up with vintage wooden handle gadgets that are painted jadite and cream. If you are going for the red and white theme, there are plenty of red vintage bed sheet and bed cover out there and vintage linens can really perk up the place. Another advantage of the red and white theme is you can also add in a fruit theme on top of bed side desk. I would leave the walls a neutral color - white of off white so that it does not detract from all your great accessories. Linoleum flooring in a checkerboard pattern… [cont.]

How did the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s help to end segregation and discrimination against Blacks and Mexicans?
Q. What were the legal steps taken in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960,s help to end segregation and discrimination. Why did the civil rights movement rely so heavily on test cases in the courts.
Asked by Tommy R - Wed Dec 5 23:42:55 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Some milestones in ending segregation: 1940s - Armed forces are desegregated by executive order signed by President Truman 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court decision stating that segregated schools were not separate but equal, paving the way to desegregation. Unfortunately, as you might guess, many states and local governments dragged their heels on implementation - going so far as to even close public schools or facilities which were to be opened to persons of all ethnicities 1965 - Civil Rights Act The premise of using test cases in the courts by civil rights activists rested on two points - they wanted to show that it was unconstitutional and secondly, they couldn't do it through the popular votes given that many… [cont.]

A. the selective training and service act of 1940, was passed by the congress of the united states on september 14, 1940 becoming the first peacetime conscription in united states history when president roosevelt signed it into law two days later. this selective service act required that men between the ages of 21 and 30 register with local draft boards. Later, when the u.s. entered ww2, all men aged 18 to 45 were made liable for military service, and all men aged 18 to 65 were required to register. men were selected on the basis of need. if the army needed 100,000 more infantrymen, the army would get top priority, and likewise if the navy needed more sailors, they got priority. the u.s. just didn't randomly select men, they had draft… [cont.]

A. Selected Stories by O Henry. He wrote a lot of good short stories, and he died in 1910. You can read a bunch of his stories online at The Complete Short Stories of W. Somerset Maugham by W. Somerset Maugham. Ernest Hemingway wrote some short stories, too, that have been put into book form. There's a book Leo Tolstoy Short Stories (and one that is the same title but volume 2). You can also read some of his short stories online at You may enjoy The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales by Brothers Grimm, which are certainly darker than any "Disney-fied" version of the fairy tales. A. During that time the Communists under Mao were on a sort of offensive against the KMT under Sun Yat Sen. So there was a strife. There had been floods along the Yangtse River and as a result famine and disease (cholera and a particular boil). Plus the Japanese had occupied China along the East, down towards Hongkong. All the major cities were under the Japanese. You can imagine how it might have been.

A. According to my political science course, Japan tried to expand its territory because Japan itself had very few of the natural resources and raw materials it would need to modernize and industrialize. Without conquering new lands, it would forever be dependent upon imports of oil, minerals, etc.

Q. Does anyone have information on space travel, the envronment or music from the 1940s?? I need Canadian info but I can have American too, or info from other countries that relates to canada. I'm having a hard time finding stuff so anything is appreciated. Thanks!
Asked by Annabel - Fri Dec 26 16:47:46 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. WWII is going to have dominated much of the decade, with Canada having been at war since 1939. Space travel in the 1940s was science fiction. Environmentalism is a relatively recent thing, so not likely a major concern in the 40s. Music - think Big Band, Swing, etc. Some of the popular artists of the time would have been Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Vera Lynn, Doris Day, Frank SInatra. Check out the link below and that may give you some idea of life during the first half of the 40s.

A. Offset lithography, same as now, except some of the presses were just a little different. Not by much though. The title was press operator and it has always been a decent job. Comparatively speaking it was probably a better job then than it is now. Here are some links about the offset printing process.

A. Back then, they used what is referred to as "pin curls". It's where you wind up sections of hair into little swirls, and hold it in place with bobby pins. Very effective to get curly WILD hair. lol :D My mother used to pin curl my hair (long time ago) and it never failed to give me a lot of body.

A. Urg ... this one is hard as it all happened within the course of a few years. I would have to go with (B) Why? Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Some historians argue that one of the main reasons those two bombs were dropped were to send messages to the USSR. That and the fact that Stalin was blowing up atomic weapons in 1949. A is wrong as the Detente didn't start until the 60s C is wrong even though NATO was started in 1949. It was an political association and didn't have a structure for a military until the Korean War a year later (I think). D is wrong as they didn't start the rearmaments until the 50s.

Asked by Sophie M - Wed Jan 28 10:42:30 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Clothing in the 1940s was usually pretty smart and tailored, with knee length skirts, hats, gloves, court shoes and so forth. There were shortages of fabric in the 1940s because of the war, but the rich usually managed to dress well. A rich woman would have probably worn a fur jacket/fox fur stole as fur was a much admired luxury at the time. Heres a good selection of images: Hair was usually shoulder length and worn in a variety of elaborated set and curled styles (curls were achieved using curlers or curling tongs).

A. Boys wore a scaled down version of what their father was wearing. If he was in a tux, so were his sons. If a suit would do, that's what the boys wore, too. Girls wore nice dresses, but not floor length. They weren't women yet and their dresses were nice, but not adult. No low cut necks or bare backs.
