The Palsgraf Case: Courts, Law and Society in 1920s New York The Palsgraf Case: Courts, Law and Society in 1920s New York by Manz Edition/Year: 1st ed., 2006 ISBN: 9780820563725 Format: Paperback-New SKU: 85080 Our Low Price: $37.95 Availability: This item ships within the next business day. The Palsgraf Case: Courts, Law and Society in 1920s New York tells, for the first time, the full story of Palsgraf v. Long Island Railroad , the most famous negligence case in American legal history. The book is not another doctrinal discussion, but instead views the case as a historical event -- one in which the lives of ordinary people intersected with the legal theorizing of a scholar judge. Drawing on archival materials, contemporary newspaper articles, electronic databases, and personal interviews, the author covers the famous case from the fateful accident at the Long Island Railroad's East New York station to the rejection of Mrs. Palsgraf's motion for reargument. Included are in-depth profiles of the Palsgrafs, the Long Island Railroad, the attorneys, and all thirteen judges who heard the case. Also covered are all the major controversies surrounding Palsgraf , such as scope of the factual inaccuracies in Cardozo's majority opinion, his alleged insensitivity to women and the poor, the actual level of the railroad's negligence, the validity of Mrs. Palsgraf's alleged injuries, the legal strategies pursued by opposing counsel, and whether the case can be viewed merely as a contest between a rich corporation and a poor working-class plaintiff. The book also tells the story of the American legal profession at a critical time of its development. It discusses the impact of the growing diversity of the bar, controversies over changes in legal education, debates over the value of the jury system, the influence of politics on judicial selection, abuses by negligence attorneys, and ongoing court congestion. The book's value lies in providing a myriad of detail and in placing the case within its historic context -- both of which are |

If you look deep enough into Black History, You will come face to face with your mind. Rich with history and imagination, a perfect blend of historical facts and the facts of life, Grandpa Tell us a Story: Drinking from Ancient Wells/The Story of the Game Black People Play-Trilogy, is the story of the game Black people play to survive. This, first book of the trilogy, The Games Mind, places you directly in the middle of the Mind-experiences of a young Black outlaw, Grandpa, from birth to his early-teenage years, and goes into great detail of how he created and played the game he is to play the rest of his life; a life filled with power and adventure. In the process, he demonstrates a revolutionary view of the complexities of a Black youth's Mind while preparing to survive in America as a self made Black man. At the same time, Grandpa Tell us a Story: Drinking from Ancient Wells/ The Story of the Game Black People Play-Trilogy, is visionary and is inspirational realism: The definition and dynamics of the Mind of the Game Black People Play, on its deepest and highest level, is not only pulled together in a story about the physical and spiritual drama in Grandpas life as he comes of age on the streets and in penitentiaries, but it also takes you on an adventure in Grandpa learning the details of the Mind of the Game Black people played in Ancient West Africa, we played in slavery, we played in the 1920s Harlem renaissance, we played in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, and how they are related to the Mind of the Game you Grandkids are playing in the twenty first century. This brings Grandpas story in line with Black history and his Ancient Ancestors in a language that Blacks of all ages can understand. |

Golf's Golden Age Book Description: The late 1920s and early 30s were the Golden Age of American golf, when many of the greatest amateurs and professionals to play the game were at the peak of their careers. Most notably among these was Bobby Jones, the legendary amateur from Atlanta, Georgia. In 1930, Bobby Jones captured golf's greatest achievement, the Grand Slam, by winning the U.S. Amateur, British Amateur, U.S. Open and British Open Championships in a single season, an unprecedented and unmatched feat in the history of the game. Golf's Golden Age celebrates Bobby Jones and 61 of the premier players he competed against, including Chick Evans, Walter Hagen, Tommy Armour, Walter Travis and Gene Sarazen, in his quest to win the Grand Slam through a series of never before seen vintage photographs from Jones' private collection. A biographic sketch of each golfer will accompany the photographs, taken by legendary golf photographer George Pietzcker. The profiles will provide an overview of each player's career, their contribution to the game's history, and a contemporary quote (preferably from Jones) drawn from the rich archives of the USGA library. Introductory essays will set the tone for the book discussing the Golden Era of American Golf and the significance of the Grand Slam, and provide an overview on the life, career and contributions of George Pietzcker. A concluding essay will detail Jones' rich history and contribution to the game of golf. Golf's Golden Age will be produced with the full cooperation and endorsement of the USGA including images and artifacts from their vast archives. About the Author: Rand Jerris, Director of the USGA Museum and Archives, holds a B.A. and M.A. from Williams College, and a Ph.D. in Art and Archaeology from Princeton University. Jerris is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the daily operation of the Museum and Archives, as well as the long-term development of its collections. How can I make trends from the 1920s look modern?
Q. lol I meant 1920s not 1940s. :] Thanks for correcting me on my other question! Anywho... what type of clothes could I wear to make 1920s trends look modern? accessories too? pictures would be nice, but aren't needed. :]

A. actually, i think some 1920s trends are back in style. but aim for minimal (simple, solids) or romantic (lace, ruffles). short dresses and stockings are hot right now too. dangling necklaces could probably work. there's also short hair, if you don't already got it. be yourself, and do what you feel like.
